Being a 4 year student athlete at Winona has been fun and all, however it is a huge time comittment with a lot of sacrifices. Sometimes you feel that your social life is being cock blocked by a sport which is 100% true. In this blog today I’m going to talk about the first world problems of being a student athlete. So welcome to my life in a nutshell right here.
1. No drinking 24 hours before a practice and 48 hours before a meet. (We have practice every day and a meet almost every weekend, therefore going out is non existent).
2. Never able to look cute for class. As as student athlete we have lifting and practice all the time, therefore going to class in your work out clothes or all sweaty is usually my regular appearance.
3. Coming back on Sunday nights where group meetings and campaigns meetings will consume your life the rest of the night. Being a student athlete usually I will travel 4-9 hours for most meets and when I get back Sunday night I usually have to stay on campus the rest of the night wanting to shoot myself.
4. Have never been able to go out on a thirsty thursday.
5. Going home on weekends will not happen all semester.
6. My team is my family. We eat together, cry together laugh together and are each others best support system.
7. A lot of your weekend nights consist of hanging out with a recruit
8. Your friends give you shit for not ever going out and calling you lame, when in reality you would love to but you can’t because of the drinking rules.
9. Having the biggest appetite because your life consists of working out. All you want to do is eat.
10. You think planning your registration for classes is hard? Try planning your schedule around tennis meets, lifting and every day practices. IMPOSSIBLE.
So it’s that time where Easter is the next holiday around. Easter is known for the awesome candy, pastel colors and pretty good food. I love sharing recipes, so I am going to share a few with you on here today. The first recipe I’m going to share that is a must is very simple and that is puppy chow, however it’s the Easter style puppy chow. All you need to do is buy a giant bag of peanut butter M&M’s and toss them in.
9 cups of crispy rice cereal
1/2 cup of peanut butter
1 cup of chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar
1 bag of peanut butter M&M’s
In a saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate; add peanut butter and mix until smooth.
Remove from heat, add cereal and stir until coated.
Pour powdered sugar into large plastic bag, add coated cereal and shake until well coated. Store in airtight container.
Another very simple recipe for Easter is pretzels with a hershey kiss and M&M on top which are called belly buttons. It’s very easy and cheap to make! Here are the directions
Bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels
Milk chocolate Hershey’s Kisses
M&M’s candy in your preferred variety. Milk chocolate with peanuts are a favorite combination.
Heat the oven to 175° F. Set a number of bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels (one for each treat) in a single layer on a cookie sheet, then top each pretzel with an unwrapped Hershey’s Kiss.
Bake for 5 minutes, until the chocolates are soft when touched with a wooden spoon. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and quickly press an M&M’s candy into the center of each Kiss.
Allow the treats to cool thoroughly before storing.
Many of us are about to graduate, including myself which is the most bitter sweet things I have ever experienced. As my dad says this is the most humbling part of your life due to frustration. My newest past time hobby includes….applying for jobs…non stop. I personally believe the most frustrating part of the process is having an interview with a company and afterwards realizing you are more overqualified for that job and not even getting it. Also it’s going to be a harsh reality when going out and drinking whenever you please is a thing of the past. The day drinking, thirsty thursdays, sunday fundays, and whatever else occasion you find to drink are numbered. Because come on, who day drinks at home with their parents after graduation? I have accepted the fact that in one short month I will be living at home with my parents, unemployed and single. But hey I guess i’m not alone on that one. Also the conversations about how we were freshman getting written up in the dorms for drinking are becoming frequent throw back conversations that seem to happen more and more long ago. For the time being i’m going to soak up every moment of being a careless college student before it’s time to be a real person. Sunday Funday anyone?
Easter is right around the corner and sure it’s not as hyped up as other holidays, however the Reeses egg makes Easter just that much more exciting. From what I know almost the entire population is obsessed with Reese eggs. I swear they have crack in them, they are just too good. There are giant, medium sized and mini Reeses eggs in which buying in bulk is always the safer decision. The best thing also is that they are only 47 cents at freedom gas station! Doesn’t get much better than that right? When it comes to my Easter basket every year, I always request the easter bunny to put a shit ton of Reeses eggs in it. Why? Because Reeses eggs aren’t available all year long so when these eggs go into hibernation until the next Easter I want to be as prepared as possible to handle the situation. I’m sure many of you feel my pain as well with the situation. Oh- and if you feel really adventurous buy the white chocolate reeses eggs, they are just as good, if not better than the milk chocolate. Therefore when you have a free moment of time consider buying as many Reeses eggs as possible because your time is becoming numbered with these little slices of heaven.
Alright, so i’m sure many of you have heard of hot yoga before. However how many of us have actually tried it? I’m sure many of you fitness people have gone to the wellness center or even ran around the lake for exercise. However a new trend/source of exercise I have been getting into is hot yoga. As we all know sometimes activities in Winona are limited because it’s a small town and we don’t want to spend money. At Infinity, they provide these hot yoga classes I am talking about and they are actually pretty great. Yes, a hot room and different exercises does make a great stress reliever. Plus these classes are extremely affordable. Every Thursday at 5 p.m Infinity offers a hot yoga class for $5. It’s an hour long and is a great way to calm down and feel stress free. Yes, this is for both men and women so men don’t feel ashamed about attending this either! Next time you are bored and need a little pick me up, try attending one of these hot yoga classes. Especially during finals week, this could be a life saver 🙂
Alright my whole blog is about what to do in Winona to avoid being bored during these frozen tundra months. I know most of you are going to cringe when I say this, but this post is about using your time to start applying for jobs (SENIORS). Sure, many of us don’t even know if we are going to get out of bed and make it through life due to our hangovers let alone know what you want to do with the rest of your life. Trust me, it’s hard, but getting a good foot in the door before graduation is such a relief. Now, I am sure most of you have heard of LinkedIn. It’s basically the G rated version of your Facebook where the about you is professional and all the binge drinking profile pictures are set aside for that one where you are dressed in a business suit. Therefore, jump on the LinkedIn band wagon and make a resume. After that is done, go on careerbuilder or any company website where companies are hiring. Word of advice, if a company contacts you back and you realize it may not be what you want to do, still take that interview and work on your interview skills. It really helps getting interview practice, so take all that you can get. Also, don’t be scared to go out of your comfort zone, apply to places that aren’t in your state or hometown. Growing up is about spreading your wings, so do what you want, not what a significant other or parent is telling you. You have worked your butt off for 16 plus years, therefore make this time about you and not anyone else. All in a nutshell, put yourself out there with attempting to find a job before graduation, you will thank yourself later. Lastly be selfish during this time, because this is your future, you are young and well educated so remember there are no boundaries.
I’m sure most of you have watched a tennis match before such as Wimbledon, US open or maybe even a friend’s match. But believe it or not, Winona State has a tennis team as well (which I play on). Yes, Winona State has a women’s tennis team and our spring season is right now. We play at the west campus indoor courts and have meets just about every weekend. Sure it’s not your typical campus sport like football or basketball, but women’s tennis needs some love too! That’s why I’m encouraging you guys to come out and watch us play. There isn’t much to do in Winona anyways, so try something different and come watch an action filled tennis match. Our next home meet is this Saturday at 12 p.m against Duluth and Sunday at 9am against Sioux Falls. So next time your bored aka this weekend, come try something different and come watch Winona State tennis team play!
So I’m sure all of you are aware Valentines Day is Friday aka Single Awareness Day. Sure, some of you may have a valentine to celebrate it with, but I’m sure many of you don’t as well. Sulking because it’s Valentines Day is not acceptable, because this is a day you should treat yourself. Who ever said you can’t be your own Valentine? Take this day and make it about YOU. It is Friday, so it is the end of the week, so why not a better excuse to relax and pamper yourself. First, go buy yourself some nice flowers and Starbucks in the morning. This is what a Valentine would do right? But who says you can’t pick out your own flowers to spice up your room in the middle of this frozen tundra? After your classes and activities are done for the day, go to the grocery store and buy a nice meal and a bottle of Moscoto, and when I say a bottle, I mean a giant bottle. When you get home go and take the time to cook yourself a nice meal and enjoy a glass or entire bottle of Moscoto. Pop in a chick flick as well and enjoy your night. I guarantee following these steps will make your Valentines Day, a day of happiness and about you. So instead of dreading this day, look forward to it and remember you don’t need anyone else to make you happy but yourself.
So we all love to eat, there is no doubt about that. But what is better than good food and good company, especially on a weekend after your body is completely dead from going out? Now that football season is over i’m sure many of you are thinking what you are going to be doing with your hungover lives on Sundays now. This post is catered to that exact thought. I don’t know how many of you are bloody mary drinkers like myself, especially on a sunday after a good night out Saturday. Most places in Winona have excellent bloody mary deals on Sundays. Personally my favorite place to grab a bloody mary on Sundays is Betty Jo’s where they are, delicious and reasonably priced. So when you wake up and have nothing to do, grab a couple friends and help cure that hangover with a delicious bloody mary.
Don’t worry, your Sunday fun with your friends is not over after you consume your bloody mary. Since Sundays used to be dedicated to food and football, why can’t they still be dedicated to food now that football is over? This is when a potluck with your friends comes in handy. Whether it’s your friends, roommates or teammates, talk about all bringing a dish to this potluck. The good thing about a potluck is you can bring whatever your heart desires because there are so many different dishes. I’m going to post a few simple recipes that would be excellent choices to bring to your potluck.
4 ounces of cream cheese, half cup of peanut butter, 1/8 cup of creamy milk, 1 cup of confectioners sugar, 8 ounces of cool whip, mini chocolate chips and graham cracker sticks for dipping 🙂
MEAT LOVERS BAKED ZITI (too easy)
All you need to do for this delicious meal is boil noodles (box and a half is usually perfect pan size). Next just cook a pack of ground beef (unseasoned) and mix with the noodles. Next, You mix pepperoni and cheese in with the noodles and beef. And cook at 400 for about 10-15 minutes.
Now you have the perfect ingredients to make Sunday a time of good friends, food and good company!
When it comes to winter, one of the things I hate most is the lack of fresh air and motivation to keep active. Being a college student, I understand that getting a college education is expensive and most of us want the most bang out of our buck, especially when it comes to paying our tuition. So why not take advantage of working out for free with Winona’s three story fitness center? Being a student athlete here at Winona has required me to stay active and hitting the gym up as much as possible. The third story track, second level of exercise machines and 1st level of weight lifting equipment gives any student a variety of work outs to choose from. Also there are a variety of work out classes available at Winona’s fitness center to spice up anyone’s work out. These work out classes are free as well for any Winona State student and include turbo kick, butt and gut, tighten and tone, total conditioning, yoga, pilates and zumba.Working out daily and lifting a couple of times a week has been the best way to take my mind off the stress in my life throughout my four years of college at Winona. Along with relieving stress, I have noticed an improvement in my overall strength and speed at practices by simply hitting the gym an hour a day. Staying active in winter is crucial for one’s overall health to one’s body and greatly helps prevent muscle deterioration. So instead of sitting around waiting for warmer weather to be active, I encourage you to get out there and make goals for yourself physically. Exercise is simply one of the best ways to avoid the winter blues!
